The starting point is the shoreline, an in-between place where elements are revealed or concealed with the ebb and flow of the water. Through video projections, sound pieces and ephemeral drawings in the sand, the artist brings together coastal biodiversity, the lace-making tradition and writing.

The maritime motifs of the lace (shells, scales, seaweed) are joined by the barroeira, a species that builds reefs from sand and shells on the region's beaches.

Joana Patrão (Barcelos, 1992) works across video, photography, drawing and installation, exploring ways of relating to nature as mediated by the image. A graduate of FBAUP, she has been exhibiting since 2014.

In cinema, her experimental film “Anima” (2024) premiered at IndieLisboa and went on to screen at international festivals. Later this month, on 10 October 2026, her work will be featured in the Luas Novas programme, which Batalha Centro de Cinema dedicates to new names in Portuguese cinema.
