OVERLAPSE, RIDDLES & SPELLS
Andreia Santana
"Overlapses, Riddles & Spells", a project conceived by
the artist Andreia Santana, includes an unprecedented
installation with works of glass and iron accompanied
by two video projections, with the collaboration of
Vânia Doutel Vaz, António Poppe and João Polido.
The installation "Overlapses, Riddles & Spells"
conceived a hybrid and mutant space that serves as
a receptacle for metamorphic objects in constant
movement to be triggered through performance,
poetry and sound, emphasizing the co-relation and
interdependence between beings drawn from the
dermatological reading of the works.
The presented film was developed with the support
and within the scope of the Artistic Residency of Solar
- Cinematic Art Gallery, Curtas Vila do Conde and the
cooperation of Normax - Fábrica de Vidros Científicos
that authorized and made available its space for the
filming. The capture of images and film in industrial
and manufacturing contexts during the development
of projects has always been an integral part of Andreia
Santana's artistic practice, since 2016. All the material
recorded and accumulated to date is part of a vast
archive that directly informs the artist's practice but
which had never had autonomy or physical presence
to the point of being materialized and displayed
in exhibitions. In "Overlapses, Riddles & Spells" the
footage gains integral space and contaminates the
entire installation, contributing to the creation of new
temporal layers and enhancing its haptic dimension.
Through the lens of a device that controls the mass
production of glass consumables for laboratories
and pharmacies used by Normax, in its factory in
Marinha Grande, the artist documents the different
material tensions of the glass during the cooling
process, the aestheticization of the meta and zoomorphic
forms of the manufactured objects, and its
ultimate condition as a receptacle for the development
and analysis of new beings and species.
