ANIMAR 18
Celebrating one of the best years ever of animation films in Portugal, the 18th edition of ANIMAR proposes, from March 4, 2023, a program centered on animation cinema, which goes through an exhibition, guided tours and thematic workshops at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, activities to be extended to film screenings at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theater and Auditorium, and at the schools.
This year, having as its starting point the films My Grandfather’s Demons, by Nuno Beato; The Pink Jacket, by Mónica Santos, Garrano, by Vasco Sá and David Doutel; Cold Soup, by Marta Monteiro; Nayola, by José Miguel Ribeiro; and Slow Light by Katarzyna Kijek and Przemysław Adamski, ANIMAR 18 opens the door to an exhibition that highlights and supports the dissemination of films that, as a whole, are already considered the best year of Portuguese animation ever, whether in number of attendance at festivals or in awards won, and in the historic Oscar nomination of a Portuguese animation short.
The exhibition integrates diversified and creative approaches to the films production, some more imaginative, constituting artistic installations and working in parallel to the films, others of a more documentary nature, integrating several of the objects used in the production process, such as studies of characters, puppets, scenarios, props or costumes.
For the schools, 3 film screenings are prepared, aimed at students of various age groups – Best Of Portuguese Animation 2022, for over 12 years, New Portuguese Fiction, also for over 12 years, and Cinemini On Tour, for over 3 years – and a set of workshops of stopmotion, pixilation and optical toys.
My Grandfather’s Demons, in preview, and Nayola are the films to be shown at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre, in the opening and closing sessions of ANIMAR, on March 4 and June 4, respectively.
The ANIMAR project, held by Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery and promoted by Animar – Educational Service, proposes new tools, means and methodologies that introduce the principle of learning through a participatory experience. It results from an innovative proposal to raise awareness of art, image decoding and mobilization of transversal knowledge, stimulating imagination through the principle of learning to play.
